Devprayag Sangam – Sacred Confluence in Uttarakhand
Where the Alaknanda and Bhagirathi rivers meet to form the holy River Ganga
Devprayag is located in Uttarakhand’s Tehri Garhwal district and lies at an altitude of approximately 472 to 830 meters above sea level. It is the sacred river confluence (prayag) where the Bhagirathi and Alaknanda rivers merge and officially become the River Ganga.
Known as the last and most important of the Panch Prayag, Devprayag holds immense religious and spiritual significance in Hindu tradition. This sacred site is widely regarded as the birthplace of the River Ganga and attracts pilgrims, seekers, and travelers from across India.
One of the most striking features of Devprayag Sangam is the visible difference between the two rivers. The blue-toned Bhagirathi and the lighter-colored Alaknanda flow together at the Sangam, creating a unique and peaceful natural sight.
Devprayag is home to important spiritual and cultural landmarks such as the ancient Raghunathji Temple, sacred kunds (holy water ponds), and the Nakshatra Vedh Shala, an old astronomical observatory. Situated on the Rishikesh–Badrinath highway, Devprayag is also a key stop for pilgrims on the Char Dham Yatra route.
